There aren't any mirrors under water so this sea lion was determined to make the most of a chance to check its appearance.
And the vain mammal seemed pretty pleased by what it saw in the reflection of a photographer’s lens as it stopped to admire itself.
The opportunity came when wildlife photographer Jon Cornforth was mobbed by a pack of 20 of the creatures tugging at his drysuit. ‘The chaos made it almost impossible to take pictures but my favourite is this striking image of a sea lion admiring its reflection in the dome of my underwater housing,’ he said.
The animal spent some time pouting for the camera, with its eyes glued to the makeshift mirror and its whiskers right up against the lens – resulting in photographs Mr Cornforth described as ‘surprising gems’ off the coast of Hornby Island, Canada.
Mr Cornforth, from Seattle, in the US, said this breed of sea lion, which has the largest ears and fourth largest body of any seal, was ‘incredibly curious and playful’.
A male seal lion can grow as long as 3.3m (11ft) and weigh about 910kg (2,000lb).
