Re: The Truth About Pit Bulls.
Dogs, as well as any other animal including humans, are a product of both nature and nurture. In the old days, Pit Bulls were bred and trained to fight each other. So genetically, they are inclined to attack other dogs/animals. They were also "culled" (killed or neutered) if they ever attacked a human in the dog fighting rings. So, aggression towards other dogs was bred into them, and aggression towards humans was bred out. Breeding has been for the most part, uncontrolled and unregulated over the past century however. People just get a male and female Pit Bull, and then sell the puppies for money. Simple as that. No effort whatsoever to "breed to standard." Still, genetics is only half the picture (I think it's even much less personally, but that's arguable). As a dog owner, you don't have any control over genetics, so all you can do is train. Training a dog properly requires an understanding of Classical and Operant Conditioning methods. This is how they learn to do "tricks for treats." It also requires strictly supervised socialization with other dogs and people. If you think a Pit Bull can kill you, don't get one, period. There will be times that it will challenge your authority, just like kids do, and you will have to physically show them that you ARE alpha. I always put Sam in a "full nelson" until he submitted and calmed down. But that's me, find whatever works for you. Keep in mind that it's just a dog. It's not a monster, and it isn't on the same intellectual (common sense) level as we are. So, my thoughts on that incident (even though you asked Pit Bull, and not me) is that that dog wasn't properly socialized or trained, and it's genetic predisposition is in question as well. It's the owner's duty and obligation to shape their pets' behavior, and we all fall short, just like parents do. Here's my dog, playing with the neighbors' Chihuaha. I think I've done well with his training and socialization. |

Re: The Truth About Pit Bulls.
Well.. Sugar Britches is actually a term of endearment, but I can understand how you might not understand that. I never ever said that pits won't fight other dogs. They were bred to fight you ignorant fuckin twit. We were talking about pits and humans. The dog in your story was failed by his owner. The dogs owner should have insured that his dog stayed in his home. He did not. Ignoring the breed is the very thing I have been bitching about. Quite a number of the imbecilic morons that have been posting in this thread, yourself included, wouldn't know the difference between an English Bull Dog an American Bull Dog or an American Pit Bull Terrier if it bit 'em on the ass. To ya'll they're all pit bulls. |

Re: The Truth About Pit Bulls.
It comes off as you trying to light peoples fires~ kinda how people use sweetie when their annoyed Bred to fight, which obviously breeds violence into the dog, violence which burst upon people the story is fitting, because I guess you missed to part where it also attacked the other dogs owner~ I,and alot of others, wouldnt FUCKING know,as we're not hardcore pit enthusiasts, its like asking someone who likes guns but isnt an aficionado to know every model of rifle and know every little difference between said model. You're obviously a very very educated person in the breed of dog you like, and that part of you I do admire, your a true enthusiast and not some poser who buys a pit cause its "thug" (looks at his friends and cousins, who despite being white as ghosts and raised in $$ think they're hardcore gangstas straight outta compton) But you do have to understand that alot of people who aren't enthusiasts aren't gonna see things beyond statistics,as they don't have many personal experiences to weigh on~I have had mainly negative as I have stated, knowing a pup,a pup that was raised right and loved turn into a vicious mongrel and attack a child pretty much cemented it into my head. That dog was sweet as can be,then randomly and unprovoked attacked. I'm sure you'll say "owners fail at raising sugar tart" but I know they didn't (these aren't the low-class cousins who currently think they're thugs,if their dogs attack I'd 100% blame the owner) And you say it's in their nature,I give you that, but all dogs have violence in their blood from before they were bred as pets, natural predators. But now most don't go around killing other dogs for no reason Should that lady who;s dog was killed (and who was also attacked) have to live in constant fear because there are pit-type dogs in the building? |

Re: The Truth About Pit Bulls.
I have nothing against any breed of dog , as long as the owners are responsible and train them. I used to be irrationally scared of Pits and staffies , I read the papers you see ... then I actually met a couple of staffies and realised how idiotic I had been , ive yet to meet a pit-bull :) Personally I prefer Border Collies , though they can be highly neurotic and nervous dogs , given training and lots of physical and mental stimulation they are the perfect pet These are my three ![]() ![]() Teddy , he is 3 yrs old ![]() Toffee , he is 2 and half yrs old ![]() and my little girl , Gypsy , she's 2 yrs old ![]() Sorry for hijacking the thread with BC's ... I can never resist showing them off , lol |

Re: The Truth About Pit Bulls.
I really didn't want to quote the whole post but fuck I'm kind of lazy tonight. Pits were bred to fight first bulls and then other dogs. A dog in a fight that bites it's handler didn't make it out of the barn. That dog was killed. Just because a dog was bred to fight or indeed had been fought doesn't preclude that dog being a good family dog. Look at the Vick dogs most of them are now service dogs I'm not a psychologist . That lady is very upset about this incident as would I , but every dog in her building didn't attack her. Same type of thing happens to everyone that has some sort of negative life experience. I can't help that. I'm not my neighbors keeper. I have never ever heard of an English or French bull dog ever being called a pit type dog. I'm also rather surprised that an English Bull did this at all. They are usually very laid back kind of dog. I had one named Dumpster. |
