Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas
Anyone else have an interest in them?? I think they're awesome.. completely misunderstood, fascinating, and generally beautiful. I got into the hobby of keeping them a few years ago and find them to be incredibly low maintenance, interesting, rewarding little pets. Anyway, some general info from wiki: Tarantulas (as the term is used in North America) comprise a group of hairy and often very large arachnids belonging to the family Theraphosidae, of which approximately 900 species have been identified. Some members of the same Suborder may also be called "tarantulas" in the common parlance. Some genera of tarantulas hunt prey primarily in trees; others hunt on or near the ground. All tarantulas can produce silk—while arboreal species will typically reside in a silken "tube tent", terrestrial species will line their burrows with silk to stabilize the burrow wall and facilitate climbing up and down. Tarantulas mainly eat insects and other arthropods, using ambush as their primary method of prey capture. The biggest tarantulas can kill animals as large as lizards, mice, and birds. Tarantulas are found in tropical and desert regions around the world. Most tarantulas are harmless to humans, and some species are popular in the exotic pet trade. All tarantulas are venomous, but only some species have venom that, while not known to have ever produced human fatalities, can produce extreme discomfort over a period of several days. |

Re: Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas
I had a Rosie when I was 19 and knew absolutely nothing about them. It started to malt or whatever and I came home pissed to the gills. I thought he was hurt so I goobed him up with Polysporin. Needless to say he died the next day.

Re: Several Different Pictures of Tarantulas
In the 80s I was in the Marines. I brought out a little black tarantula from South America. He made the trip in a little Styrofoam cup. He adapted to the climate in the States very well. I would let him out with supervision at the office in my hut. He would sit on my shoulder while I was doing paperwork. Perfect little gentlemen. I had much traffic through my office just to hold Vlad the Impaler and keep him company. He was quite the hit. Everyone was always looking out for him catching the biggest and juiciest insects for him. He lived for two years and then one day he was gone. He was just a damn spider but everyone was bummed when he departed for better hunting grounds. Stay thirsty my friend!
