Didn't they find an oxygen valve had been opened by hand too? Sorry if that's been covered in the video. I read up on it one time, I think there is pretty clear evidence they were alive on the way down. Great post kanda,  |

Explosion: A rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner, usually with the generation of high temperatures and the release of gases. Looked like an explosion to me in the video. Whether they survived it or not, it was still an explosion. |

There are various types of explosions and explosives (high, low, etc). What Kanda is pointing out is this isn't a high explosive like a car bomb, but rather like throwing an open cup of gasoline on a campfire. True, throwing gas on a fire results in a "A rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner" and is often described as "explosive" but it's not fast enough to create a shock wave or sonic boom. The Challenger "explosion" was so slow it's effect was the same as suddenly opening the throttle on a poorly made Dragster, the sudden acceleration literally torn it apart, rather than cutting it apart like a high speed c4 explosion. Think of a balloon tightly filled with air, popping it with a pin causes it to explode, breaking the sound barrier and scaring the dog. Releasing the same balloon results in "A rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner", also scaring the Dog. The Orbiter in this case was the second balloon, and it tore itself apart structurally because it couldn't take the stress on it's frame. |

read the report.... 'explosion like'. it was a fast consumption of fuel but it wasnt an explosion. the deflagration seen in the incident was not fast enough or violent enough to classify as an explosion. the fuel leaked, ignited and rapidly burned, it didnt explode.

they had a back up oxygen system built into their helmets and a few were found on (they did have to be turned on manually) i dont recall if it said that in the vid or not though. |
