True, throwing gas on a fire results in a "A rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner" and is often described as "explosive" but it's not fast enough to create a shock wave or sonic boom.

The Challenger "explosion" was so slow it's effect was the same as suddenly opening the throttle on a poorly made Dragster, the sudden acceleration literally torn it apart, rather than cutting it apart like a high speed c4 explosion.

Think of a balloon tightly filled with air, popping it with a pin causes it to explode, breaking the sound barrier and scaring the dog.

Releasing the same balloon results in "A rapid increase in volume and release of energy in an extreme manner", also scaring the Dog.

The Orbiter in this case was the second balloon, and it tore itself apart structurally because it couldn't take the stress on it's frame.

There was no explosion of the shuttle, the fire effect was created by sunlight. The shuttle tore itself apart due to the effects of supersonic wind effect on an unstable carriage system when one of the solid fuel booster harnesses failed.
