Yes, you can go on a dig in Israel. There is a cave system that was excavated by invaders. After the Maccabee revolt the town above it was retaken by the Maccabees. Since the invaders had assisted the Greeks the Maccabees expelled the invaders and used the caves as a dump. They shoveled all sorts of trash and rubble into the cave system to make it unusable. You can no go to Israel and pay to help excavate the caves. The funds actually support the archeology investigation of the site saving the Department of Antiquities money for other more expensive operations. Since there are no layers in the material being excavated it is safe for amateurs to help out. They recently discovered priceless stone tablets with writing and were able to piece together the stones to form one large complete stone and translate the writings. There is still much work left to do. So you can help out. |
