Just because you have a gun on you doesn't mean you want to get into a gun battle.

And on top of that, in that situation, pulling your gun out could get you shot by someone else, or the police. Because like I said, the situation is chaotic. Most people don't know who's shooting, and if they see someone holding a gun, they might assume it's you shooting.

Which brings me to some good advice. If you are ever in a situation like that, and you pull you weapon and put down the gunman. Put your gun down immediately and stand away from the body.

I'm glad someone else said this. In addition to this, if a CCP holder does decide to engage, they better sure as shit be sure of what they're shooting at. I can only imagine I'd be shaking like a leaf if faced with trying to take down the bad guy in such a situation. In my CCP class, my instructor said, "If you do decide to shoot, you better be prepared to take responsibility of each bullet that leaves your gun". It's not impossible to think that someone carrying might accidentally shoot an innocent bystander in the process.

That retired army guy, who WAS carrying and DID draw, but ended up running and carrying children away to safety deserves a fucking medal. It's impossible to know if he would have been able to engage the shooter, anyway, or even eliminate the threat, but at least be made a conscious decision that he knew WOULD (probably) help.

Exactly, in a situation like that, there's a good chance you wouldn't be clear behind your target. So a miss or even a through shot could cause collateral damage.

And you as a civilian don't have the protections the police have in those situations. Unless the gunman is directly targeting you, then I believe you would be safe from a collateral damage charge. Unless you just recklessly fired.

There's so many things to take into account. Which is why if you are going to carry a gun, you should be trained. Not just at operating and marksmanship, but trained in situations you may encounter.

Because whoever you're shooting isn't going to be standing still a 15 or 20 yards. And you may not have time to stand correctly and breath.

I think it's most important to practice shooting a moving target behind cover.
