Richard Speck Crime Scene Pictures
Richard Franklin Speck was serial killer who systematically tortured, raped and murdered eight student nurses from South Chicago Community Hospital in Chicago on July 14, 1966.
In the early hours of July 14, 1966, Speck broke into a townhouse in Chicago that was a dormitory for student nurses. Armed and with the intent to rob, Speck's actions quickly escalated to unimaginable violence. Over the course of the night, he systematically tortured, raped, and murdered eight young women, all student nurses, in a brutal and indiscriminate attack. The brutality and randomness of the killings shook the nation and instilled a deep sense of fear and vulnerability in communities. One nurse, Corazon Amurao, miraculously survived by hiding under a bed. Her testimony later proved crucial in identifying and convicting Speck. The killer was apprehended a few days after the murders when he sought medical attention for a self-inflicted wound and was recognized by hospital staff. Speck was found guilty and sentenced to death in 1967. However, his sentence was later commuted to 50 to 100 years in prison following a U.S. Supreme Court decision that temporarily invalidated all existing death penalty sentences. Speck's notoriety was further cemented by his life in prison, which was marked by controversy and further media attention. Richard Speck died of a heart attack on December 5, 1991, in prison. |
