Pictures From Demonstration Where Journalist Martin Alder Was Killed
In a tragic incident during a demonstration in the Somali capital, renowned Swedish journalist and photographer Martin Adler, 47, lost his life. Adler, a seasoned contributor to Britain's Channel 4 News and a freelance journalist for various newspapers, including the Swedish daily Aftonbladet, was fatally shot by an unidentified gunman. According to an Associated Press reporter who witnessed the murder, the assailant approached Adler from behind and fired a close-range shot to his back before melting into the crowd. Adler's death was instantaneous. He had been covering a demonstration organized by the Islamic Courts Union, which had recently taken control of Mogadishu from U.S.-backed warlords on June 5. Reports suggest he was documenting protesters burning U.S. and Ethiopian flags. Notably, Adler was positioned among the crowd, away from the heavily guarded area where many other journalists and Islamic courts leaders were stationed.
