Yeah, I was really surprised to learn about the back story to this photo, too!
I was born several epochs ago, and was always told that this is a picture of a spy being executed. Learning about the truth of it makes me wonder what else I was misinformed about...

It really doesn't change much if you know your Vietnam Conflict history. It was well documented that Nguyễn Văn Lém, the man executed was a murderer. But he was also a captain in the Viet Cong.
