Jayne Mansfield wasn't scalped at all. It was a wig sitting on the dashboard. She wore a lot of head pieces back then. I saw an interview with the coroner who cared for her and he said her head and hair were fully intact. Wow...Bob Crane's pic is hella bloody! How long until he was found?

Several commenters have said that she wasn't scalped, but that's not quite true. While it is true that she was not decapitated and she did wear a wig which when found some distance from her body may have caused initial witnesses to think they had seen her disembodied head, her death certificate lists her immediate cause of death as "crushed skull with avulsion of cranium and brain." An avulsion is a forced separation or detachment. So yeah, she pretty much was scalped, although a scalping can just involve loss of the skin of the scalp, so her injury was even worse, and much gorier as she lost the entire top of her head and its contents. Another one of her injuries listed is a "closed fracture of right humerus." The humerus is the upper bone of the arm, so she probably saw the car about to go into the back of the truck, a split second before impact and instinctively held her arm up in front of her face to shield herself. She also had "multiple lacerations of (her) hands and lower extremities." So it was a really bloody, grisly accident. All three adults that had been riding in the car's front seat died, but three of her children who had been asleep in the back seat all survived. As far as Bob Crane, his body was discovered several hours after his death by an actress he had been co staring in some dinner theatre production with. She entered his home when he had failed to show up for a lunch meeting earlier that afternoon. The scene was indeed quite bloody as his skull had been bashed in by some kind of blunt, heavy object and an electrical cord was wrapped tightly around his neck.-someone REALLY wanted him dead. The murder weapon was never found or identified, but when Crane's friend/hanger-on John Carpenter(not the movie director) was tried for his murder years later, cops theorized it was a tripod that had been owned by Carpenter. Carpenter acquitted of the murder and the crime remains unsolved. BTW, I realize I'm responding to a nearly 10 year old comment, but what the hell, both deaths are even older, but they're still of interest.  · |
