Re: Inside The Car of Dale Earnhardt After Crash

I agree - very impressive. I have not ever seen any photos of any part other than the outside of the car and covered with a tarp.

The seatbelt did break and his jaw hit the wheel, sending his jawbone into the back of his neck where it crushed the spine.
Again, I HAVE seen other photos from inside the car....I've searched high and low for them and haven't been able to find them again. If I remember right they show more blood spatter/tissue(?) around the webbing of the seat belts. I didn't post this photo as a tease, just thought it was interesting and suitable matter for the board. Not gory enough for some? Sorry--Unfortuneatly this is all that is out there.

Also funny side note--Recently I went through North Carolina on a cross country trip and toured many of the NASCAR shops including Dale Earnhardt INC... In the museum portion of the facility I noticed on all of his driver suit "uniforms" that were on display had a black piece of tape on the upper shoulder covering up someting. Must have been at least 10 different ones with this. I looked closely and finally found one that was peeling a bit and saw underneath it. A Simpson racing patch....Manufacturer of the seat belts used in NASCAR at the time. The company his widow sued claiming they caused his death.

You are the fuckin man/woman!
Been wanting to see these for a long time!

Re: Inside The Car of Dale Earnhardt After Crash

The accident wasn't bad at all. Cause of death was not trauma related. The force of impact and weight of the helmet caused his neck to snap. Nascar has implemented new laws requiring a neck brace which secures and cushions the neck area and a strap (optional) which keeps the head from whipping forward. The five point harness seatbelts are virtually impossible to break. This thing about open face helmet and hitting the steering wheel (if that did happen) had nothing to do with his death.
You are correct. We really won't know until lawsuit against Simpson is settled and info is released to the public! It's common sense to think if your head strikes a steering wheel, while traveling at 180mph you wouldn't survive! If this happened! I'd say it contributed to his death just as the brain hitting the front of the skull could cause fatal trauma! Nascar needed to do something so hence the Hutchens Device was the answer. Still an interesting set of photos/info!

Re: Inside The Car of Dale Earnhardt After Crash

On April 10, 2001, Myers published his report rejecting NASCAR's explanation, finding that Earnhardt's death was the result of his inadequately restrained head and neck snapping forward, independent of the broken seat belt (making the question of proper or improper installation irrelevant).
Thanks for that bit of info! Seatbelt breaking may be irrelevant to cause of death, but doesn't mean a breaking seatbelt didn't contribute! Broken neck most likely killed him instantly before head hit steering wheel! Something very strange happen in that car that day drivers wreck all the time and I've seen worst wrecks than Earnhardt's....where the driver walks away! who knows.
