Re: Death Pictures of 14 Year Old Emmett Till
I think it's amazing that they decided to have an open casket, to show the country (or world) what happened to him. Of course, at that time it may have been an exercise in futility, plenty of bigots out there would've said he got what he deserved.

Re: Death Pictures of 14 Year Old Emmett Till
Those who committed this had no balls at all, NO healthy person would do that to anyone, especially someone still being basically a child. It was a courageous decision to hold an open-casket funeral, particularly concerning the cultural and social climate at that time.

Re: Death Pictures of 14 Year Old Emmett Till
Hope you guys don't mind me reviving this thread, but I haven't seen too many Emmett Till threads on here. I first learned about Till in 9th grade and while we were shown the picture, we weren't told about how the stench of his rotting body could be smelled blocks away from the church where his funeral was held and that mourners were holding scarves over their noses. I'm pretty sure I read that in addition to demanding an open casket, his mother didn't want the mortician to do any "touching up" of his corpse. I can understand that, but they could have at least dealt with the smell without altering his physical appearance. Prior to his viewing they could have immersed his body in several changes of a formalin solution, for example, or even a very weak bleach solution, so as not to whiten his skin. I did this with a lobster claw I found on the beach once in the early stages of decomposition. I immersed it in a weak bleach solution until I could find out a better way to preserve it; I opened the container after several weeks, expecting the worst, but was greeted with the clean smell of bleach instead of the farty smell of spoiling seafood.
