Charles Whitman Crime Scene Photos
Charles Whitman, a former Marine and engineering student at the University of Texas at Austin, carried out one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history on August 1, 1966. This tragic event, occurring on the University of Texas campus, marked a significant moment in the nation's awareness of mass shooting incidents and led to changes in police response tactics. In the early morning hours, Whitman murdered his wife and mother in their respective homes before heading to the University of Texas campus. There, he ascended the university's iconic tower with a cache of firearms and began shooting at people below. Over the course of approximately 90 minutes, he killed 14 people and wounded more than 30 others before being shot and killed by police officers. The motives behind Whitman's actions were complex and multifaceted. Prior to the shootings, he had sought professional help for mental health issues and even expressed concerns about his own violent impulses. An autopsy revealed a brain tumor, which some medical experts speculated might have influenced his behavior, although this remains a subject of debate. Whitman's attack had a profound impact on public consciousness and law enforcement procedures. It was one of the first mass shootings to receive widespread national media coverage, bringing the concept of a "lone gunman" perpetrating a mass shooting into the public consciousness. In response, law enforcement agencies around the country began developing specialized tactical teams, known as SWAT teams, to better respond to similar situations in the future. In a written statement, Whitman expressed his desire for a post-mortem examination of his brain to investigate the potential physical causes of his mental illness. His request was eventually fulfilled through a police autopsy, revealing the presence of a brain tumor. However, medical professionals held differing opinions regarding whether this tumor had any influence on Whitman's actions. |

Re: Charles Whitman Crime Scene Photos
Paving the way for Eric & Dylan, Cho, and many others. The first school shooter. Most of the people he shot from the tower, since they had never seen or heard of thing sort of thing, were standing in open view. In fact most of them were trying to get a good look at the tower due to their curiosity about the gun shots. A far cry from today when one shot causes mass panic, and scattering of people on every direction for cover.
