Re: Alex Zanardi Crash Pictures

Alex Zanardi

In the 2000 season Zanardi was not signed for a team, but was interested in a CART comeback. He tested for Mo Nunn and opted to sign to the team for 2001, however he was not successful for the most part. In his most competitive race of 2001, he suffered a violent accident at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz on September 15.

The crash occurred while Zanardi was leading the race in the closing laps. After a late pit stop, Zanardi was attempting to merge back onto the track when he accelerated abruptly and spun into the path of Patrick Carpentier. Carpentier was able to avoid him, but Alex Tagliani was not and Zanardi's car was impacted from the side, behind the front wheel, splitting the monocoque in half. Zanardi lost both legs (one at and one above the knee) in the impact and nearly three-quarters of his blood volume, though rapid medical intervention saved his life. Further portions of his legs were amputated during three hours of surgery to clean and facilitate closing the wounds. This was the end of his open-wheel racing career.

This is the most well know picture you can see parts of flesh flying through the air... later confirmed they were parts of his legs. (Make sure to view high resolution.)

This image shows his body limp and clearly his legs no where to be found.

This picture was taken after he was removed from the car and lost almost 3/4 of blood which you can see puddled on the track.

Re: Alex Zanardi Crash Pictures

I didn't know where to put it.... If its better off in the death section feel free to move it there. He didn't die, but pretty damn close.

Thanks

Re: Alex Zanardi Crash Pictures

He was my favourite CART driver in the late 90's. The man was just incredible. When he went to F1 (1999?) and drove for Williams (?) he just didn't perform as well. Won Indy too!

Re: Alex Zanardi Crash Pictures

It like I-Spy ... the graphic adult version.

I am still trying to sort through Items/Body-Parts from the first picture.
I can clearly see the fire suppression container and what looks to be his left kneecap is the larger piece of flesh. The left was the first impact zone and he lost more on his left leg.
