The driver was Tom Pryce and it was the 1977 Formula 1 South African Gran Prix. A car across the track caught fire and the fire marshalls ran across the track - only 1 of the 2 marshalls made it, as 19 year old Frederik Jansen Van Vuran was struck head on by Pryce's F1 car. The 170mph impact tore the young marshall's body in half, while the 40 lb. fire extinguisher he was carrying struck Pryce in the face of his helmet. The helmet strap having been pulled upwards and backwards at such force nearly decapitated Pryce. Tom Pryce died nearly instantly at the age of 38 years old.
