Re: DR's Official MMA Thread

I'll admit that I didn't think Gus had a chance at all but he surprised me. Great fight, indeed.

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread

Close fight but regardless of how you feel about Jones, he landed more, was the aggressor, had him rocked in the 4th, and they were even on takedowns. Jones won 3-2. Most of the media, fighters, and fight stats all agree. Great fight regardless of who won. I had money on Gus when Jones was 6-1
I agree, if you read Daniel Cormier's tweets after the fight he pretty much said it best... lotta other fighters were calling bullshit, honestly i don't see it.

I wanted a new Light Heavyweight champ just as much as anyone - but like you said - Jones turned it up and 'demonstrated his warrior spirit' in the 4th and 5th rounds. He landed powerful head-kicks and elbows, even if he didn't technically land as many 'significant strikes' according to the Boxing-based judging, he did more significant damage.
Which is NOT to take anything away from The Mauler.
He's the first person that has actually shaken Jon Jones' confidence inside the ring... especially in that first and 2nd round. His takedown defense was amazing.
He came in and did the three main things he needed to do:
  • Stuff take-downs.
  • Use his boxing skills and reach.
  • Utilize leg kicks.

I'm just glad the doctor didn't stop the fight at the end of the 4th round because of Jones' cut above his right eye, that would've been just as bad as a stoppage when he dislocated that toe during the Sonnen fight.
NOBODY would want to see the fight end like that.

To me it seems like all the fighters calling bullshit on the decision come off as 'haters', which i also don't get. It's like hating on Michael Jordan during his prime with the Bulls.

That fight was the epitome of 'leaving it all inside the Octagon'.

What was it like live?
How crazy was the crowd during the main event??
Did you wear your helmet during the event and film it???

We had a good time. We were seated right with teams/family of the fighters. Team Tristar, Red Fury, Nova Uniao, Team Jacksons ect.

Re: DR's Official MMA Thread

I watched the fight 3 fucking times and scored it 58-57 Jones. JJ imo did enough in the last 2 rounds to pull it off, although I could see the argument of it being a draw or going the other way. THe ufc is not giving Gus his rematch which imo is total bs. There was no definitive winner here.

No rematch?!

wtf?! The ONE guy who has actually given Jones a fight and they're not gonna do a rubber match?!?! Does Texiera get the next fight?

Maybe they're letting Gus get in another fight with a 'top tier' guy to build him up before he rematches Jones...

"To BE the man, you gotta BEAT the man."

IMO to earn the strap, as a challenger, you gotta finish the champ.

"Could you answer me one question?" Balboa asked. "Yeah, sure," Creed replied. "Did you give me your best?" Balboa asks. Creed replies begrudgingly, "Yeah, yeah." Balboa says, "Thank you," as he walks away from the door.

Apollo Creed got exposed that night.

Difference is, Jon 'Not Quite Human' Jones came out saying he was "Only at 70%" during the fight, whether that is honesty or saving face will be determined next year.

He's looking to pad his win streak by facing Glover in lieu of a rematch, we'll see if he underestimates Teixeira the same way he did Gustafsson.

Gustafsson came in to what is essentially Jon Jones's home crowd ( Rochester, New York). A 6-1 underdog and was a spinning elbow block away from winning the title. By the 4th round the Big Swede won over the crowd.

It's the ufc's decision to set up Jones, Teixeira. I don't think Jon has too much leverage on who he fights. What bothers me is what he said after the fight. "I won decisively, a rematch is not necessary." Shut up Jon. That was his first real fight without having a size and reach advantage and he was fucking pushed to the brink.

According to and ESPN article...
White told ESPN the Teixeira fight was requested by Jones.

"That's what the champ wants,"
White said. "We'll probably have that fight on the Super Bowl card in New Jersey."

Jones, in a statement released to the website, said he plans on changing anyone's mind who thought his previous dominance had faded in the Gustafsson fight, which took place at UFC 165 at Toronto's Air Canada Centre.

"I said before the fight my sights were set on breaking the record," Jones stated. "I want to crush the record. I want to beat the record so bad it can never be broken. I'm going to fight Glover and I will answer all the critics about the Gustafsson fight. I will fight Gustafsson after I fight Glover. I won the fight but I look at it as a blemish on my record because some people think I didn't. I promise you, he will be next."
Jones is #1pfp, he can call his own shots as much as someone like Anderson Silva he wants to control his reign and his legacy...

..the Nike money probably factors into the decision as well.
