Didn't want to use the term 'communist' so I used soviet union to describe the political system in east Germany at the time, should have made it clearer

Gutmutilator: Were the houses on the west really that close when this border tower was in operation? That would have been kind of creepy living that close to a GDR watchtower.
Also, I think it's odd that more Germans in the west didn't do any "target practice" on these assholes. If I had been around and these yokels had started shooting, I would have killed everyone in the tower and at the checkpoint that I could get in my sights. They would have either moved the border back a mile or so, or learned to live dangerously. Shooting at a border crosser should have brought a hail of retaliatory gunfire.
