Based on all the ugliness that has spilled out in recent years across the industry, I'm guessing one of the studio higher-ups or promoters had been by to demand sexual favors from her. She couldn't take it.

There is no guesswork here as that is exactly what happened. Japan is nowhere near as liberal as much of the west, so she most definitely had to have sex to get to where she was. The suicide was a boiling point, but I guarantee you it was happening for many years prior to that, maybe even as early as 12/13 yr old. There are similar cases in other parts of Asia also ie Pepsi Paloma (Philippines), Jang Ja-yeon (South Korea), and the list goes on and on..

Yes, she could have done both herself, and the world a favor, and just impaled herself onto the penises of her many fans, over and over and over, until her appetite for self-destruction was muted, and she could go back to singing happily again. She would have increased her fan base exponentially, as well.  |

Well, there is a big difference between Japan and the west as far as sex goes. For one thing, the age of consent in Japan for girls is still 13, and there has been no effort to increase it. For another, being a porn actress in Japan has NO NEGATIVE CONNOTATIONS at all. MANY have gone on to NATIONAL CAREERS as Models and spokespersons. One became a very well-known newscaster on the National News in Japan, and there was no comment whatsoever about when she debuted. A porn career in the U.S. means you will NEVER APPEAR ON NATIONAL TV, unless it is a murder case. A porn career in Japan is just a job choice, the same as being a data programmer or an accounting major in the U.S. There PROBABLY HAVE been suicides of Japanese porn actresses, just the same as in the U.S. but I think the rate is probably exactly the same as in the Japanese general population. It is probably NOT a notable factor in suicides, because it is not even a subject of much discussion over there. The Japanese do not attribute negatives to their JAV actresses. This is different in the Philippines, a majority Catholic country, with a far more repressive (Western) attitude toward sex, and adult film stars. If you are an adult film star in the Philippines, that is ALL you are for the rest of your life.  |

That is incorrect. There is definitely a stigma associated with the adult industry in Japan. If porn was so normal and lacking negative connotations, then why do their laws specifically prohibit showing genitalia? This is just one example, but there are others. But yes, I do agree that porn is very 'normal' in Japan and it is tolerated/accepted widely since it is such a lucrative business. Regarding the suicide, just because porn is 'normalized' has no relevance to whether or not it lead to the suicide in this thread. I still maintain that she was likely heavily pressured to do sexual things that she didn't want to do. In case you were not aware, There ARE legal cases of individuals being coerced into the porn industry in Japan. |

On further research I found… “The reason for the suicide is unclear. Okada was reported to have been "upset and depressed about an unhappy love affair", with an actor described to be "old enough to be her father", Tōru Minegishi, a co-star in Kinjirareta Mariko. Minegishi said that "he thought of her more as a younger sister". When asked if a relationship with Minegishi was the cause, Fukuda replied that he did not know or denied it, speculating that Okada's second suicide attempt was due to the shame that the first attempt would bring to Sun Music.” Poor girl, she deserved better. They treated her like garbage.  |
