Re: *UPDATE* Waitress Denied Tip for 'Gay Lifestyle' Gets Flood of Support

I tip very well for excellence. Not because I feel obligated but because I like to, and I appreciate a dedicated service worker. I tip furniture movers as well as trash collectors, hair stylists and wait staff. I appreciate them; tipping plus being very polite and not leaving a sloppy mess for them is courteous and the least I can do. Oh I leave tips for hotel maids as well.

Re: *UPDATE* Waitress Denied Tip for 'Gay Lifestyle' Gets Flood of Support

I've seen people be so disrepectful and rude to wait staff, cashiers, etc. It infuriates me. You get what you give in life, and I've never had purposely bad service anywhere but one Subway.

Re: *UPDATE* Waitress Denied Tip for 'Gay Lifestyle' Gets Flood of Support

Servers are not paid minimum wage. That is not the law anywhere. They are a paid a tipped employee's minimum wage which is different. If your tips do not average your overall pay, by law the company has to make up the difference. Have you ever met a wealthy server/ bartender? No. They work hard to make a living like everyone else with less benefits not to mention dealing withe all the petty needy shit fucks of the world. The IRS automatically assumes you make on average 15% on all your sales. They track it and you pay the restaurant a percentage of your sales for the bartenders and busses as well as the IRS

Re: *UPDATE* Waitress Denied Tip for 'Gay Lifestyle' Gets Flood of Support

I don't know where 'here' is but $9.19 is over a dollar more than regular minimum wage here, in Illinois. And over twice what serving minimum wage is.
i live in washington state...9.19 is statewide no matter what you do

all im saying is i think it's a bit more than silly to be socially obligated to tip a specific part of the food service industry but not the rest

Re: *UPDATE* Waitress Denied Tip for 'Gay Lifestyle' Gets Flood of Support

A fair day's pay for an honest day's work. If someone is working 40+ hours a week and still can not afford to live then they should find another job in a higher paid industry. No one is forcing them to stay employed in a company that pays peanuts and crackers.
Of course someone's going to say that the restaraunt industry would collapse without wait staff, but maybe that is what needs to happen so the industry can be rebuilt to make it fair.
Apart from my first job, i have always negotiated my wage and working agreement. They want a certain amount of work from me then it costs them a certain amount, if they want more work from me then it costs them more. Sorry if i sound like a douche but if someone is not smart enough to negotiate a fair wage and work agreement with their employer then that's not my problem.

washington state has a minimum cash wage of $9.19 an hour... there is no tipped employee wage in this state. Oregon was the same way when i lived there.

http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm#Washington

also:

In Massachusetts, where the tipped minimum wage is $2.63, the average income of tipped waiters and waitresses is $13.13. In Washington State, where the minimum wage for wait staff is $9.19, the average wage is $13.00 after gratuity. Of the five states where wait staff earn the highest average income per hour, four have a tipped minimum wage below the non-tipped minimum wage.
