How did he know it was gonna be "a slap and some taunting"? He didn't, because you can't predict the future especially with a mob surrounding you. Someone stomps on your head while you're down in the water and you're dead. If you fear for your life you're justified to use deadly force.

Here is my opinionated profile on Miu:

1. He acts like this is not the first time Miu has knived people. He knows how to knife vitals. He also knows how to play cool, lie to cops and huddle his peers after he has attacked people. His "group" would have passed through that kill zone shortly after the attack.
2. Miu has a huge ego and a short fuse. Aging has destroyed his body, and he is experiencing signs of dimensia, but he is unwilling to accept being a has-been. He hates women especially now that they remind him of his "undesirable old man" station in life. On the river, he can not stand being belittled by teens and women. Calling him a molester pushes his buttons from the onset and sparks his first charge at the teens.
3. Miu repeatedly charges and confronts the youths and women, and does so with alternating fits of rage and creepy smoldering anger. On the river, he does not back down from anybody he decides to confront - despite wide open exit routes and everybody emphatically telling him to go away.
4. First Miu charges the youths literally lounging in their tubes, in an odd and fruitless confrontation. I believe Miu puts the snorkel in his mouth to free up his hands to pull his knife on the boys. I think he intends to use his knife to cut apart their float and slice their tubes. Losing his snorkel distracts Miu for the moment, a painful reminder of his senility, but he has no intent to leave the teens unpunished - not while he is the only armed man in the river. He quickly returns to the mocking youth after abandoning the fruitless snorkel search.
5. At that point, Miu becomes transfixed by the appearance of the two women. In the attached pics, Miu stands close to them, letting them touch his chest as they yell at him to go away. Miu has a creepy gaped-mouth expression as he alternately stares at the two women (especially Ryhley), all the while holding and fondling the blade of his knife with two hands. My God, this is serial killer behavior!
6. Miu's first overt physical assault on the river is punching Blondie in the face. She is lucky he decided to lead off with a punch as he clearly has knifing on his mind.
7. After knifing a few teens who were defending Blondie, Miu purposefully turns toward and knives Ryhley's slim body, penetrating her stomach and diaphragm in one slice. That is a targeted move, not self-defense.
8. After knifing a few more teens who were defending Ryhley, Miu purposefully turns and charges toward Ryhley to cut her a second time. Miu's friend Foster Grant even intercedes to try to protect Ryhley, but that is not necessary. Ryhley is saved from a second fatal assault by two things: Miu stumbles during his charge (yet another reminder of his impotency), and another woman yanks Ryhley out of the kill zone, leaving Foster Grant and Miu side-by-side to survey the bloodbath.

More like fuck around and find out, fuck little punk ass kids. Little ******* got what they deserve for running their fucking mouths.

Looks to me like he was berated, pushed to the ground and kicked or punched in the head. He’s got up and one of the kids has gone to attack him and he’s defended himself. I would have been scared too. Sorry someone died, but don’t fuck around kids.

The first assault was when Miu punched a woman who was mouthing off to him. Miu's initial assault happened off camera so observers are quick to blame the kids for attacking the man. But the boys were defending the woman who Miu had just punched (while holding an open knife).

If you watched the trial, you would know that the assault carried this aggravating condition that sealed Miu's fate with the jury:
