Maniac Otter Remains at Large in Florida
A mum saved her daughter and her dog from a potentially rabid otter which had barged into their home and launched a savage attack.
Casina Ewert sprang into action when she heard a commotion out on her porch at home in Lakeland, Florida.
She found her daughter Gwyn, 17, and the family French bulldog Scooter face-to-face with the marine mammal.
Gwyn had tried to shut the otter out but to no avail, allowing the animal to race inside and lock claws with the dog.
Casina told Wistv: "I snatched it by the tail, and then, I held it up like a prize. The otter’s going crazy".
"It was clawing at me and grabbing on to the backs of the furniture in my house.”
Casina opened the door and hurled the otter outside.
She then discovered that her daughter's leg had been bitten, prompting a trip to the hospital where she received a rabies and a booster shot.
While Scooter had had a rabies vaccination a few days before the attack, he was put in quarantine as a precaution.
The brave mum has downplayed her role in the dramatic incident.
“It’s really not heroic. There actually was no thought process. Just run in, jump on the otter,” she said.
Dustin Hooper, owner of All Creatures Wildlife Control, said the presence of an otter onshore and attacking a human suggests something is 'not right'.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission set up traps to catch the animal.
The agency has received reports about an aggressive otter attacking another dog.
While it is unclear whether the otter had rabies because it is still at large, experts have said its behaviour was abnormal.
