Jodi Arias Penalty Phase Retrial

Anyone following the trial so far? Looks like they are having a tough time finding impartial jurors.

I'm disappointed it won't be telecast this time.

--------------------------------------

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/...tion/16817063/

Do you believe in the death penalty?

Do you understand that Arias has already been found guilty of premeditated murder and that a previous jury had determined that her victim suffered?

Could you set aside what you know about the first trial to make a fair assessment as to whether Arias should be sentenced to death or life in prison?

In May 2013, Arias, now 34, was convicted for the 2008 murder of her lover, Travis Alexander, who was found dead in the shower of his Mesa home with a bullet in his head, a slit throat and nearly 30 stab wounds.

The jury that convicted her also found that the murder had been committed in an especially cruel manner, qualifying Arias for the death penalty. That jury, however, could not reach a unanimous verdict on a life or death sentence.

That decision is the only one the new jury will have to make. Opening statements are scheduled for Oct. 20. Judge Sherry Stephens has indicated that the trial should be over by Dec. 18.

Jury selection for the retrial began last Monday with the judge screening 300 potential jurors for bias and time constraints. By Thursday, the initial pool had been cut down to about 170; and on Monday, five panels of eight people each were led into the courtroom for more in-depth questioning about the questionnaires they filled out last week.

Some jurors said they were morally opposed to the death penalty. Others said it is not imposed frequently enough.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez cautioned them that Arias is a convicted killer and that they would not be reconsidering her guilt or innocence.

Defense attorney Kirk Nurmi told them that they are supposed to follow their consciences and deliver their own verdicts.

"There are no wrong answers," Nurmi told them.

This phase will last at least 10 days more days. Jurors who survived Monday's questions were asked to return on Oct. 16. The final jury panel will have 16 to 18 jurors. At the end of the trial, several will be designated as alternates, leaving 12 people to decide Arias' fate.

Re: Jodi Arias Penalty Phase Retrial

The jury selection process is fucking stupid. They choose from such a massive pool and get to ask lots of questions. If they go in with a desired outcome I'm sure they can find 12 people out of a couple hundred to all have the same opinion on anything if they select specifically for that purpose.

I think select from maybe 16, speak to them and weed out the 4 who seem nuttiest, maybe give them an IQ test and weed out the stupid ones, then just fucking run with it and see what a jury of the accused's peers come up with.

But the defense wants people they think will be agsinst death penalty and the prosecution wants the opposite, so finding people they both agree on is hard. They need so many because finding people without a strong opinion either way is extremely difficult!

The judge should just decide, and give her death

That first pic always makes me laugh.

She's a wicked manipulator. Watching her police interviews and her not being able to pull one over on the cops was awesome. Death.

For whatever reason Women don't get the death penalty nearly as often...... If there is ever a case that deserves it, this is it.

I think the first pic is heartbreaking. You can see the pain etched in his death face, he was suffering. She should die a extravagant, painful death

That pic is really horrific. I don't know why, it's just so disturbing.
