To Cut Costs, Pennsylvania School Uses Sheep As Lawnmowers

A central Pennsylvania school has a clever tool to keep its grass in perfect condition: sheep.

The sheep will be in charge of keeping the grass near its solar panels neatly trimmed, reports The Patriot-News. But the animals will not be worked too hard; while they will nibble grass in the morning, they will spend the afternoon resting in the shade.

By forgoing lawnmowers, the Carlisle Area School District says it can save up to $15,000 a year. And it doesn't even have to pay the cost of food; the district says it already has it on hands, so it only needs to supply the sheep with water.

A middle school assistant principal is providing the sheep. He is still trying to figure out exactly how many sheep he needs to use to keep the area clear.

We hope the sheep enjoy their new job.

Driven through Carlisle before. Sounds like a good plan but am concerned about how much CO2 is made by sheep.

When they are done they can serve lamb chops in the cafeteria.

Re: To Cut Costs, Pennsylvania School Uses Sheep As Lawnmowers

Tis a great idea, read about a city doing this with a park months ago but they used goats instead. Saved a hell of a lot of money. Glad to see others doing it.
