Re: Cleveland Police Shoot 12-Year-Old Holding BB Gun
I'm sorry, but this is why anecdotal evidence is not evidence at all. Consider the following: In 2008, there were approximately 765,000 sworn Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs.) If you personally witnessed a different, individual officer kill a black man every single hour of 2008, you'd have 8,760 dead black men, & 8,760 killer cops (regardless of justification) for the year. While that would be truly incredible (in fact it would be a ludicrous 40 times greater than reality!!!), see the graph below to see how insignificant the "killer cops" numbers would be compared to all active LEOs in the U.S. In fact, over a seven year period (2003–2009,) the average number of black deaths (all causes in police custody) were 220. The average number of white deaths over the same period? 289. That means a white man has a 13.5% greater chance of dying in police custody than a black man. Re: Cleveland Police Shoot 12-Year-Old Holding BB Gun
"Damn near a fact"? Is that the new way to say a few percent? This graphic begs to differ. And I think the families of Kelly Thomas (brutally beaten to a pulp, crying out for his father), David Kassack (shot dead, laying face down in the snow), Zachary Hammond (who's date sold a joint, where the cop also stated he was in danger, about to be run over and shot him in the front... yet video shows the cop made it up and the unarmed teen was shot in the side and back), and Dillon Taylor (who had headphones in) would disagree with you. The fact is, it takes about 40 million police interactions in any given week before a fatal shooting occurs. Check the link, you can filter many circumstances - the fact is, white or black, very, very few are unarmed (and yes, knives, machetes, pipes, etc. ARE considered armed). And hell, we STILL have no idea how two black officers rolled upon a white man and shot at him and killed his little boy, Jeremy Mardis. They won't release crap in that case but give vague "we believe he was targeted" and the father had his hands up. No warrant, no crime, and no details on what was seen in the video that they also won't release. No hate crime charges or federal deprivation of rights investigations based on the race of the cops and victims alone. Nothing, nada. No movement in the case for months. |
