Re: Atheist Teen Forces School to Remove Prayer from Wall After 49 Years
Kanda, I'm not sure if you thought I was angry, but I wasn't. I was getting kind of redundant. You're right, it's hard to change someone's mind on a topic like this, that involves such passion. I don't see that as a reason not to try though.

Re: Atheist Teen Forces School to Remove Prayer from Wall After 49 Years
i didn't at all. i wasn't trying to point fingers or anything... it started as me trying to give a compliment, then kinda snowballed in to (ironically) a discussion about religious discussions. i don't mind if others try to win the hearts and minds of others... i love to learn new things and am very open to it. i like being proven wrong. i just don't like doing it to others when it comes to topics like religion and have failed, personally, to ever change anybody's mind but my own. i mean, i helped convert people when i was christian and helped talked people out of chirtianity... but really, they came to the conclusions themselves and i just sat and listened like a friend. |

Re: Atheist Teen Forces School to Remove Prayer from Wall After 49 Years
i just prefer not to be the catalyst of change in others. i like to live my life and if others want to change because of my thoughts and opinions, then that's their choice...but my own opinions change constantly as i learn new things and since learning never stops, who i am and what i believe now is not who or what i will believe down the line. so if i were to try to convince somebody of my point of view, i would have to tell them that my point of view is subject to change and i may learn something down the line that would make everything i believe currently void. so i personally don't feel right about changing a person's mind in to a perspective i may abandon later. instead, i like the "don't listen to me, figure it out for yourself" approach and try to urge others to try it as well.

Re: Atheist Teen Forces School to Remove Prayer from Wall After 49 Years
I completely understand where you're coming from. I'm the same way on almost all topics. When it comes to religion, I can't be that way. I can honestly say I'll never change my mind on religion. I view it as an albatross around the neck of society, something we'd all be exponentially better off without. So if I can possibly do something to change someone's mind, even debating it on a gore site, I feel like I should. Like I've said, every bit counts. (I'm hoping the girl that got the prayer taken down feels the same way, and isn't just trying to be different or whatever... to bring this back to the original post |

Re: Atheist Teen Forces School to Remove Prayer from Wall After 49 Years
lol kanda, i think you have been around long enough to remember I haven't always been nice. I have been in my share of debates on this site and I wasn't always so nice. As for me being nice now I don't see how people throwing insults and cussing makes you look more right(not saying you do that). Some may think anger in a debate is a good thing, but I no longer feel that way. I can express my personal views in an adult manner without trying to insult the opposing side. Just because you disagree with someone shouldn't mean you should hate or disrespect someone. Especially in a debate. Also, debating is a wonderful way to learn. I am also passionate about my beliefs but I do try to enforce that they are MY beliefs and if I discussing them it is not with the intent to try to get someone to change their mind on how they believe. As for me being nice. Thank you for the compliment. I do have a mean side, but I rarely show that now days. Life is too short to be an asshole. I would rather leave this world with more friends than enemies. |
