On December 14, 2024, an incident involving two off-duty Chicago Police officers occurred in the 1000 block of S. Mayfield Ave.

A vehicle occupied by five people, including the two off-duty officers, was stopped there. An unknown individual exited another nearby vehicle and exchanged gunfire with occupants of the vehicle the off-duty officers were in, striking a male civilian.

One of the off-duty officers discharged a firearm during the incident. The off-duty officer has since been relieved of police powers as the investigation continues.
