On December 14, 2024, an incident involving two off-duty Chicago police officers happened near the 1000 block of S. Mayfield Ave.

It began when a vehicle with five people inside, including the two off-duty officers, was stopped in the 1000 block of S. Mayfield Ave. An unknown person got out of another nearby vehicle and exchanged gunfire with people in the vehicle the off-duty officers were in.

A male civilian was struck. One of the off-duty officers discharged a firearm during the incident. That officer was later relieved of police powers while the investigation continued.
