On August 16, 2023, Hudson County Sheriff's Officer Andrew Conti, Jr. was in a marked K-9 police vehicle and attempted to stop a motorcycle operated by Reymis Geronimo-Segura, 28, of North Bergen, for motor vehicle violations.

Officer Conti observed the motorcycle near Paul Amico Way and Seaview Drive, then followed it northbound on County Avenue with his lights and sirens activated. The motorcycle got behind a tractor-trailer, then passed the truck on the right. Officer Conti stayed behind the truck and radioed dispatch that he would not be pursuing.

Seconds later, the motorcycle crashed into a white SUV on County Avenue as the SUV pulled out from Charles Street. Officer Conti continued without lights or sirens, stopped at the crash scene, approached Geronimo-Segura, and requested medical assistance.

Geronimo-Segura was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where lifesaving efforts were performed. He was pronounced deceased at about 1:13 p.m. The other civilians involved had non-life-threatening injuries.

A state grand jury later voted "no bill," and no criminal charges were filed against Officer Conti.
