Car Driven By 78-Year-Old Hits Bangkok Shrine, Injuring Three
A 78-year-old man drove a BYD electric car into the Guanyin Shrine at the Thian Fah Foundation on Bangkok’s Yaowarat Road at about 1:30 p.m. on October 1, injuring three people. About 30 worshippers scrambled to escape. A 60-year-old woman trapped beneath the front bumper was freed by rescuers and taken to Klang Hospital with serious injuries. A 21-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman suffered minor injuries. The collision damaged the statue’s base but left the Guanyin statue intact. Police said the driver reported becoming dizzy and briefly blacking out before pressing the accelerator. He has high blood pressure, and an alcohol test detected no alcohol. Officers were questioning him and considering a charge of negligence causing injury.
