There's not too much you can do in situations like this except pay attention to what's going in right in front of you. At around 0:29 the killer starts going for his gun. Sure, he bladed himself away but at least be aware enough, with two of them mind you, to recognize such a shift.

Then be willing to get the fuck out of the danger zone. Beat feat or dive in. The killer might as well have raised a sign saying, "I'm going to shoot you."

The "friend" casually strolling by is slightly interesting.

On a side note, the partial leg stiffening is a good sign of a CNS hit.
