Re: Worker Killed After Being Caught in Machinery (Russian Lathe Accident)
His head was literally the only thing preventing him from being twisted into the lathe shaft. As soon as he tried to move it away into a more comfortable position, he lost his grip and was instantly wrapped around the shaft backwards, at which point he would have died instantly.

Jesus fucking Christ, that was brutal. I've seen lots of 'degloving' injuries of fingers, that one looks like it degloved his entire lower leg, I think that's his tibia on the ground in front of the machine. You can also see his skull cap in one of the photos as well. I do think he lost consciousness within a spin or two, but holy fuck he had to have felt his spine getting snapped in half as it started to pull him around. |

Re: Worker Killed After Being Caught in Machinery (Russian Lathe Accident)
Holy fuck, you're right, *good eye.* Ya gotta wonder how long he could have sat there with his head in that position like that. If he could've done so indefinitely, then that would mean he committed *two* fatal mistakes, because he could've instead kept his head there and shouted for help until someone showed up to hit the kill switch. One more reason why no matter what, panicking is *never* a good idea. I wonder if they teach machinists that, to just chill and stay put if you're set and the situation isn't immediately getting worse by the second. Obviously that would be lower on the list than not wearing loose clothing and *not fucking reaching into dangerous machinery while it's still running.* I don't think his death would've been instantaneous just from his being wrapped around it that first time. He would've been as good as dead and gone in a few seconds, but he would've known he was fucked. As it was, his first trip around probably knocked him clean out when his head hit the frame around the lathe. That's what makes this really brutal, is that it's blunt-force trauma. His body was getting *slammed* against the frame on each go-around and the centrifugal force was just flinging around whatever came loose enough. |

Amazing during all that carnage, he still managed to place his shoes neatly side by side.

Deductive reasoning would tell me the co-workers didn't get to leave work on time. Even in death, it's still possible to screw people over.
