Re: Worker Killed After Being Caught in Machinery (Russian Lathe Accident)
Metal lathes- they turn deceptively slowly, so they look harmless, but that one is probably 20 hp, and when it's geared down, you can't stop it. He managed to fight it to a draw for a few seconds. I wondered how long he was going to last. Once it grabbed him, he probably couldn't let go to hit the kill switch, so he was pretty much dead as soon as he stopped it. When his arm and back strength wound down, that was the end. Woodworking tools will cut you, but metalworking tools will grind you up and spit you out. |

Jesus' shit! I nominate for most incredible rotating machinery death video ever on Documenting Reality. Un-fucking-believable. I thought it would be a boring video when he got stuck, then he started spinning, throwing parts and disintegrating in spectacular fashion like one of the airborne turbos from a top fuel dragster. Instant tartar sauce, bottle him up! |

Re: Worker Killed After Being Caught in Machinery (Russian Lathe Accident)
Better a quick death on a lathe than a long, slow death working all day on a manufacturing shop floor. I didn't laugh when I saw this, I worked in a similar place summers while I was in university, fucking Hades on Earth that job was. Inm eighth grade, our salty shop teacher would take an old shirt and bring a a drill press slowly down to touch it. It would grab in an instant and spin like this video. He would say something like, "that's why you don't wear loose clothes around machinery" This teacher was burned all over, he had half an ear left. A plane carrying napalm had crashed near him and splashed him in the Korean War. Come to think of it, our public schools hired these old war horses. Our high school geography teacher had half a hand blown off by a German sniper in WW2. He would tell stirring tales about throwing grenades behind him to keep the Krauts "honest back there". |
