Man Dies After Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound In Baltimore Courthouse, Investigation Ongoing

A 35-year-old man has died after firing a self-inflicted gunshot to the head at the District Court of Baltimore last Friday. 35-year-old Garry Wright, of Baltimore, was pronounced dead on February 1, according to the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. Officials said on Jan. 31, at approximately 8:40 a.m., a District Court of Maryland bailiff assigned to the Baltimore City Eastside District Court was working security at the public entrance of the courthouse. The bailiff has been identified as Gary Brown, a 1-year veteran with the District Court, according to the IID. Garry Wright entered the courthouse at 1400 E. North Avenue in Baltimore. Police said the man was "suffering from a behavioral crisis," and was seen pacing.

While standing near the door, Wright pulled a handgun from his pocket and pointed it at his own head, authorities said. Gary Brown then drew his handgun and pointed it at Wright. During the interaction, Brown and Wright discharged their handguns. Police said that a shot hit Wright in his lower extremities. Wright was wounded during the encounter and was transported to a hospital where was listed in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, officials said.The IID continues to investigate the circumstances of the fatal shooting, officials said.

"This again shows that behavioral and mental health is a real and deep issue, and we have to continue to do everything we can to deal with it, and this is also another example of how we have to make sure that people who are having these kind of issues don't have that easy access to firearms or weapons," Mayor Brandon Scott said during a press conference on Friday after the shooting.

A lot of commenters with no military or police background. Unstable guy with a firearm. Pointed at head but in a split second can be pointed and fired at anyone in immediate proximity. They are keeping their eyes on him and moving in an instinctive (or trained way) to find cover/angle of fire. Carpet, doors, people, etc. get in the way. Impede movement....cause trips,falls. But your eye is still on the immediate threat. Split second decisions analyzed by keyboard commandos.
