In NYC, it's illegal to make a right turn on red, and the traffic light had to be red if the pedestrians had right of way on the crossing signals. Yep, trucker is 100% responsible even if the crossing guard wasn't there. |

So, you have drove a semi before? The angle of the yellow rain coat should be at least partially visible from the left hand drive driver seat. The driver's vision might be following the rest of pedestrians movement crossing from his right to left and reluctant to check back the right side again and assuming everyone have crossed. Don't know what the hell that woman is thinking standing on the pedestrian crossing. |

He couldn't have possibly seen her from where she was standing. Although I have to say it was his fault, the walk signal was still allowing pedestrian traffic... it was counting down from 20 after he already ran over her.  |

At the same time, she should have not been a crossing guard with that lack of situational awareness. Imagine if other kids were next to her.... Never assume big trucks can see you, or will obey traffic laws. Someone more adapt for that job would have seen the danger lurking and got themselves and/or other people out of the way.  |

I always thought that having school crossing guards beyond the grade school level was anti-Darwinian. If they haven't figured out how to cross the street by the time they are in middle school, they aren't likely to contribute to the success of the species. Let natural selection do its thing.

That's why trucks have a smaller horn that's called a "city horn" what a coincidence. If you ever driven a truck you'd know that. Considering that he drove over the person I'm going to assume that they were in fact in his blind spot. There is a large blind spot behind the hood right where that person was standing. It doesn't matter if they were wearing camouflage a yellow raincoat or a neon tuxedo if they're in the blind spot they can't be seen. But as a truck driver in the city you have to be extra vigilant to not run people over especially in a crosswalk when the lights are still white. He was probably making a right turn on red which is why the people in the crosswalk had the walk light on. But I have seen some intersections where there is a green arrow to turn right at the same time as the crosswalk signal is white. It's a recipe for disasters especially in situations like this. Will he be charged? Yeah probably but for a traffic violation. |
