Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia
I just turned 50 in Sept. It's my 3-5 year goal to relocate to the southwest... SoCal or AZ. This winter thing.... I'm over it. I was a downhill/kite skier, a snowmobiler, etc....yeahhh..fuck that shit now!....it hurts! (even the cold hurts)

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia
The point is there is no “easily” surviving what they experienced in their situation. They didn’t expect to get stuck in the elements, which is why they lacked the equipment to live. They would have had to plan on staying out there beforehand to survive that weather for a night and that likely mean bringing much more equipment than one can carry on a snowmobile. THIS is the point. Sure, it’s possible, but it would NOT be something done on a whim as your post seemed to imply. |

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia
Fair enough, I can see why you thought I was making light of the situation when I wrote, tents, barbecue and a jolly good knees up, but I am not completely stupid despite whatever impression I might have given you. I know very well it would be a fucking nightmare out there at night, but I stand my ground on the point that a snowmobile is sufficient to carry enough survival equipment to make it through the night, and in such terrain I would not advise eating cold rations as these will by default absorb body heat which is somewhat counter-productive. They needed the ability to make shelter, they needed more insulation (I noticed the dead man was wearing his helmet still which is less than ideal headgear and indicative of the lack of proper thermal headgear carried with them) They also needed fire of some sort and warm food and drinks. Explorers and military personnel regularly survive in such extreme conditions as these with basic equipment that could fit onto a snowmobile. aside from that, anyone venturing into hostile terrain and conditions must have a survival backup plan for worst case scenarios. I would not even go out into the Scottish mountains where I live without having at least a 24 hour survival plan and equipment, so I sure as fuck wouldn't be scooting around in Siberia with less of a backup plan than that. Many people have died when stranded only a few miles from shelter so you have to be prepared. It's a golden rule. They ignored that. That's why they are dead. Simple as that. |

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia
Not to belabor the point, but again, you likely have never been anywhere near this location, therefore you know nothing about what it takes to survive to state a snowmobile is sufficient. You could say I don’t either and I really wouldn’t disagree with you, but I would wager that I have been much closer than you have. You may be just guessing at random, whereas I am judging from what I saw on the ground. |

Re: Two Tourists Frozen to Death in Russia
They should've been able to survive. Build a fucking snow house. They had snowmobiles that had to have some gas in the tank. Should've been easy to start a fire. This is crazy.
