He must have had extremely poor spatial awareness. Doesn’t look like he was trying to beat the train at all and he thought he was far enough back

He did not look either direction for a train at any time. Maybe he was too senile - just focused on some destination and not conscious of trains at the time. That happens to old people. Excellent footage though. Very dramatic. |

I believe this was deliberate. It’s difficult to see but he is watching the train coming, in fact at :13 he starts going a little faster in order to meet the train. |
