As terrifying as this may be, from the images and video there wasn't anything that would be considered as critical or life threatening with even standard first aid. There was probably some damage that we couldn't see, but the braincase (neurocranium) is pretty much intact, there's no sign of any serious bleeds, and he's conscious, ambulatory, and responsive. This image might help, as it shows the position and shape of the skull structure:  Now take a look at our subject here, most of the damage is in the mandible, maxilla, zygomatic arch, and nasal bone, with only minimal damage to the frontal bone...and that's the only one that actually is considered as being part of the braincase. He was aiming way too forward, and/or flinched, and basically destroyed every non-critical structure in his face. Baring infection, or some form of intracranial damage, he'll probably live, and reconstructive surgery and prosthetics will be able to get some elements functional again, but he be fuuuked in terms of his vision...taste and smell might not be entirely lost, but there's too much soft tissue damage and not enough of a close up for me to even guess what's left. ...the plastic surgeon who sees him may well be thinking, "And this is how I'll pay for my new vacation property." |
