Re: The Station Nightclub Fire Caught on Camera from Start to Finish

All I could think about once the screaming started was how I'd feel if I were there and my fiancee was inside and I was hearing her scream, but couldn't get to her. I think I've had enough of DR for a while...

The first time I saw this video years ago I imagined the horror I would feel if I was in there with my mom and dad and we got separated and they got trapped inside or worse got stuck in the pileup in the doorway. I was so disturbed by it I nearly had to seek therapy...

I've seen some fucked up shit on DR since then but this video really takes the cake as one of the most disturbing videos to exist.

There was a video on Youtube (sadly taken down on copyright grounds) that had the full documentary shot by the news crew as a result of a previous fire some time before, it showed all the people inside before the event started, there was this young beautiful 25 y.o. waitress smiling at the camera as she took a tray with beverages, I later learned it was her day off but she was there to substitute another waitress, then the young guy serving the drinks placing a box of beer bottles in the fridge, both of them died in the fire.
It was so hard to see all those people enjoying a night out and then all of a sudden they were right in the middle of hell on earth!
Then this other guy with his fiance and sister, the sister went to the restroom before the fire started, she died in there with other eight people.
By the speed with which the fire spread I just imagine the horror of going to the restroom and when you go out EVERYTHING is on fire!

This is a very scary video that shows that you better run in a fire, you have about 50 seconds tops to get out!

Re: The Station Nightclub Fire Caught on Camera from Start to Finish

Never heard of this fire before. Good bump, HouseAtreides.

Feb. 20, 2003? No wonder. Some of us were preoccupied with more serious matters than some stupid hair band.

Check out the cunt at about 3:52. Crying about her hair as people still burn alive behind her. Vanity is a human condition, through and through.

Surprised you never heard of it. It made news all over the world. I was only 12 when it happened and I remember it (maybe because I'm from New England, dunno), though fortunately I didn't learn there was a full video of it until many years later. The footage continues to be widely used in firefighter training as a good example of just how quickly a building can combust (flashover occurred in roughly 90 seconds) and why one should never, ever line the walls of their nightclub with polyethylene and polyurethane packing foam that are so fucking combustible that they're called "solid gasoline" and literally produce hydrogen cyanide as they burn.

Oh, and one other thing - scout out EVERY exit as soon as you arrive at a new place!!!!!!

To you and anyone else that focused on hair rather than a fire happening at any place at any time. In this case a bunch of friends sharing drinks.. Who gives a fuck about the band (this band kicks as tho) or the hair style of that era.

Re: The Station Nightclub Fire Caught on Camera from Start to Finish

I like to remind people of the lessons that the Station fire taught us laypersons, so if you don't mind *clears throat*:

-Look for every exit upon arrival, and if the venue is crowded and/or sketchy, check for sprinklers

-Most people are going to exit through the door they came in by. Avoid the stampede by going to one of the other exits you scoped out.

-If at any point during any sort of event you feel unsafe, that's the time to leave

-Don't use packing foam in place of approved acoustic foam for soundproofing

-When the temperature inside a burning building reaches 1,100 degrees F, everything flammable (clothing, hair, etc) will spontaneously combust. This is called flashover and in the Station it occurred at roughly 90 seconds after ignition. It's estimated that temperatures in the Station fire got up to at least 1,400 F during flashover. That is the same temperature as the pyroclastic flows that blanketed Pompeii and caused people's brains to boil in the boathouses at Herculaneum.

-It's not always the flames, smoke, or even the heat that get you! Depending on what's burning, you could be breathing in toxic gases. The packing foam that lined the walls released carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide as it burned, the latter of which causes unconsciousness in as few as three breaths. Many victims lost consciousness in the middle of the dance floor and were subsequently incinerated.

-In the event that you wind up at the bottom of a pile of people, try to roll onto your side! This saved the life of Mike Vargas, who survived at the very bottom of the pile of people in the doorway. Laying on his side enabled his lungs to expand, and the flow of fresh air from outside provided him with oxygen, while the bodies on top of him and around him insulated him from the flames. He was the only person pulled alive from the doorway.

-NEVER go back into a burning building, or at the very least, don't go back in to save your fucking guitar! Lead guitarist Ty Longley initially escaped the building with the rest of the band...but then decided to run back in and rescue one of his guitars, and he fucking died. He likely figured that since he had an easy enough time getting out through the stage door, he could easily run back in to grab his gear, and was likely taken out by the cyanide, flashover, and/or got lost in the smoke.

And here's some interesting facts:

-The video was captured by Brian Butler, a cameraman who was shooting b-roll footage at the behest of Jeffrey Derderian, one of the brothers who owned the club who also happened to be a news reporter for a station in Providence. He was doing a report on nightclub safety in the wake of a deadly stampede at a Chicago concert three days prior. In fact, the very morning of February 20, the day of the fire, the public was assured that there was no reason to anticipate a tragedy ever befalling a nightclub in Rhode Island. In addition, several years prior to the fire, Jeffrey Derderian had done an in-depth report on the dangers of polyethylene foam in mattresses, citing its extreme flammability. This report was done AFTER he had lined the walls of his nightclub in the same exact foam...

My bad, you're right. This is a very good thread. Has a lot of good info in it. It would behoove of me to pay attention.

I didn't make that connection the first time I visited this thread. That's insane man. Those people really never had a chance in hell to escape that hall of horrors. Thanks for all that info, HouseAtreides Great post!

Yes, it was basically a death trap. So many factors combined to just make the perfect fire. I have a feeling that even if the doorway jam hadn't occurred or had somehow been unclogged, a lot of people would still have been overcome by the cyanide and/or the flashover.

The funny thing is that I consider the video to be one of the most disturbing videos ever recorded, which is saying a lot for someone who frequents DR, yet it's readily available on YouTube!
