Re: Shark Attack (aftermath)

**As of July 4, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. (CST), there have been four shark attacks on this small strip of beach. **

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Four people were bitten by a shark on South Padre Island on Independence Day, a Texas game warden confirmed.

All of the attacks happened on Thursday and were believed to have been associated with the same shark, Texas Game Warden Captain Chris Dowdy said.

South Padre Island police were first called to the 4100 block of Gulf Boulevard around 11 a.m. on Thursday for a severe shark bite to a man’s leg. SPIPD and the Fire Department provided first aid at the scene before the man was transported to a nearby hospital. KSAT has no information about the severity of the other shark bites.

Beach patrol, SPIPD and SPIFD combed through the shoreline and used drones in the area.

Dowdy said the shark has now escaped to open waters and said there is no plan to contain it, at this time.
At least someone was putting a tourniquet on, I spotted him approaching in the crowd - I was like... This guy knows first aid. He's walking with *intention*.

Re: Shark Attack (aftermath)

Some first aid lessons may help in future. Besides the tourniquet that they eventually thought of, I'd recommend positioning the person so head and chest is lower than pelvis and raise arms and legs to help centralise blood in torso and thus maintain blood pressure at heart.

Re: Shark Attack (aftermath)

As a zoologist, you can do what you want but I suggest not swimming in the ocean, even in shallow waters. The majority of shark fatalities are due to blood loss, which you can see here in the video the mass amounts of red. In some cases (rarely) people are taken whole and never seen again.
