Re: Sanitation Worker Is Fatally Crushed by Reversing Garbage Truck

I think the main mistake was deciding to jump off the back of a reversing truck, especially when it was reversing at that speed.

I agree the driver should not have been reversing that fast, but it was the decision to jump off the back knowing it was backing up at that speed that was the main cause of the accident.

Poor Jose. In Peru the trash takes you out!

Putting aside the fact that in two paragraphs you've literally said the same thing twice... you believe he didn't just lose his footing and stumble at the same time as the other guy, but that he made a conscious decision to dismount, backwards, into the direct path of a moving dump truck?

Putting aside the fact that in two paragraphs you've literally said the same thing twice...
Incorrect. Those two paragraphs don't say "the same thing". In English the central idea of a paragraph is usually conveyed either at the start or end of that paragraph. If you pay closer attention to what I wrote, you will see that those two paragraphs have different (although related) central ideas and purposes. The first states my opinion as to the cause. The second responds to an earlier comment in the thread opining that the reversing speed of the truck was the cause of the accident. Granted there is repetition between the two, however I have noticed on this site that sometimes it is necessary to spell things out a bit more explicitly so as to get my point across.

Yes, I believe he made a decision to jump off the truck. That is how I interpret the video. It looks like a deliberate action to me because he turns his body to do it. If he lost his footing and *fell* off there would not be a preparatory step (turning his body). He would simply fall off.

Thanks for the English lesson, but either you need glasses, or you should've paid more attention in physics class. If you go frame by frame you can clearly see he lost his balance at the same time as the other guy, and see his right foot slip in direct response to the bump. His body does not turn as you say, to jump off, but actually leans forward like he's trying to stay on the truck... but because physics is a thing, he was at the mercy of gravity and the laws of motion as soon as his right foot first made contact with the ground.

-----

Quick note: I put the separator here because I believe I've already made my point from what we can actually see, and the following logical argument isn't exactly necessary... but I recently learned that on this site its sometimes necessary to spell things out a bit more explicitly so as to get ones point across. So to build on the previous train of thought...

He would've been at that same mercy even if the truck was moving slower. Jumping backwards off of a moving vehicle with your legs parallel like that guy, will land you on your ass every time. There's no way he was taught to do it like that. If you're saying he had a choice to jump, then you're also saying he had a choice to stay. Why would a garbage man choose to jump in that situation when holding on while your driver is potentially being a negligent asshole is clearly the safer option?

And if you're going to jump off of a moving vehicle, you're going to do it like the other guy, but you probably believe his right foot didn't slip either and yet he chose to jump at that exact moment. There was so much trash in the area to pick up right? Why else "jump" simultaneously? Funny how their attention stays on the truck the entire time and not on any potential garbage cans that could be lurking out of view though...

Or I just don't agree with you. As I said, I interpret the video differently to you.

And my multiple science degrees and glasses are just fine, thank you very much.
