Chinese Badminton Player Collapses and Dies On Court
Zhang Z.J., a 17-year-old Chinese badminton player, died of cardiac arrest on the court during Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Zhang was playing against Japan’s Kazuma K. and the first game was tied 11-11, when he collapsed. The teenager received treatment at the venue and was rushed to hospital by ambulance, but died later that night after repeated efforts to resuscitate him failed. “Medical conclusions…indicated that the victim experienced sudden cardiac arrest,” a spokesman for the Badminton Association of Indonesia told a press conference in Yogyakarta. The spokesman defended the actions of medical staff and local organisers after footage showed what appeared to be a hesitant response to the teenager falling face down on the court. He said that medical teams had to wait for the referee to let them on the court. Zhang started playing badminton in kindergarten and joined China’s national youth team last year. Earlier this year he won the singles title at the Dutch Junior International, a prestigious youth tournament. |

I saw a docu about what the Tour De France was like in the 1970s. One of the riders died after necking half a bottle of brandy and a load of whizz for the mountain stage.  |

The genetic and sociological development of East Asians is completely different from Europeans or Africans (the tall buff ones). Many Africans and most Europeans come from hunter-gatherer stock rich in protein and cardiac muscle. The cell structure of East Asians is totally different along with their likely ailments. As sharp as they are, physical and strenuous workloads they are not congruous with. |

Very ignorant statement. Badminton at that level is tough. Cardiac arrest surprises me, but that sport is really tough on your joints and ligaments. You have to be very nimble with all that short, extremely quick direction changing.
