An interesting question that we will never know the answer to. Personally, I think they did the right thing by running away when the dude came back with the AR. It's not worth the risk, if you saw the entire altercation you would know he wanted them dead, and might not be friendly to someone trying to aid them.

I do wonder where they were standing while this was all going down, because if they were visible to the shooter that might give us a hint, but who knows.
