Parachute Jump Goes Fatally Wrong for Infantry Officer
The body of aspiring Army Officer, F. C. d. R, 26, was buried last Friday afternoon, after infantry officer, who graduated last August 5, at the Military Academy of Agulhas Negras (Aman), died after suffering an accident during a parachute jump on Thursday, the 10th, at the National Parachuting Center, in Boituva (SP). He died during an accident while performing a parachute jump in a private activity. The aspirant was still rescued alive and taken to the Hospital but could not resist his injuries and died around 12:30 pm.  The accident is being investigated by the Civil Police of the State of São Paulo. The victim left Resende with an instructor for the National Parachuting Center, in Boituva, in the interior of São Paulo. According to information from the Civil Police, while executing the jump, there was a problem with the aspirant's main parachute. He opened the reserve parachute but was already too close to the ground. |

That was easily corrected with a cut away... He was either poorly trained, and/or panicking and frose up...  |

They take you through a LOT of different scenarios when you are learning skydiving. I was surprised to find out all the things you can do with a bad chute. There are probably 10 different things you can try. But the end decision is to cut the main chute loose, count to 3, and pull your reserve. You can't hesitate. You go through the steps and DO IT!

I believe he opened it at 19 seconds. I think its the small dark blue chute that comes out behind the main chute. I'm not a parachute expert so someone can quote me on this.
