Re: Open Trailer Truck Reverses Over Mom and Daughter on Motorcycle
My nomination for one of the most senseless deaths ever on Documenting Reality. Sure, the scooter came in too close, but such unaware, pushy, stupid, self-centered single mindedness is par for the course in the oriental lands. Ditto for the semi truck stopping and backing up on a crowded avenue with lots of traffic and scooters. Plenty of shit headedness here, the moral of this story is if you are driving in Asia, have the biggest vehicle...

Re: Open Trailer Truck Reverses Over Mom and Daughter on Motorcycle
I feel for the husband/father, loosing his family to a random car accident like that has to be awful on its own, but he's probably going to blame himself for the rest of his life. 12 years ago I had a situation like this happen to me when I was in high-school, and I still feel guilty about it to this day. I was due to graduate in about a month, and with all my requirements done, I had full on "senioritis". My last class of the day was senior study hall, and it was common practice to just to blow it off and go home early. I didn't have a car at the time, so my grandmother was my ride if I needed it. I called her and asked her to come pick me up early, since it was Friday and I wanted to start my weekend early in order to binge on video games, hot pockets, and felony quantities of mountain dew. I didn't live all that far from home, maybe a couple miles, so most the time I would just walk home, but that day I was feeling particularly lazy. On her way to pick me up, a semi merged into her lane, apparently oblivious that she was already there and that forced her off the road and made her crash into a telephone pole. I started to worry because it was taking her too long. I called her, and she didnt pickup (which is out of character for her), so I call again and to my great relief, she picks up, but that relief was short lived. In a barely audible voice, she says that she just got hit by a truck, and that she was sorry she couldn't come pick me up... Yeah, she gets hit by a truck, and the first thing she does on the phone is apologize because she cant do what she said she would do. That's the kind of woman she was. A quick side-note, my uncle, whom I never met, was killed on his way to a comic book store. He was riding his bike when he got side swiped by a semi truck who didn't know he was there. He was 16 years old. This was harder to write than expected, so I'm just going to quickly wrap this up. She survived the accident, but even after many years of rehab, her health was never as strong as it was before the accident, and she later developed many issues that stemmed from the accident, all I could do was watch her decline, and blame myself. Even though it took many years, she actually was able to bounce back. She's in better shape today than she was before the accident. Ive been told that I shouldn't feel guilty or responsible for the accident, and that I didn't need to ask for forgiveness, but I do, and have. Shifting the blame to someone else feels like a cop-out. The fact that is, she would not have been hit by that truck, on that day, if I had just decided to walk home. I nominate the video of the guy in the wheelchair who was pissed because the elevator doors closed on him. So in a rage, he backs up and rams the doors, then deciding that wasn't enough punishment for this affront, he rams the doors again. Not without great irony, they open wide enough for him to break through and fall to his death. |

That's great that you still have your grandmother in your life, even more so that she's in good health. Try not to let the needless guilt eat away at you. On a side note, how old are you if you only left school 12 years ago (I assume you're 30 as the leaving age is 18 in the US)? I feel old, I left school 21 years ago, haha!

I feel bad for the family angle with this story but basic following distance is a thing. I wouldn't be that close in a car.

This is either pure stupidity or a case of someone getting way too complacent around heavy machinery. So goddamn preventable.
