Corpus Christi officer shoots man with metal pipe on Weber; video circulates social media

A Corpus Christi police officer shot a man who allegedly was swinging a pipe at several people and the officer, police said.

Police were called for a suspicious person in the 4500 block of Weber Road, near Gollihar Road,*about 8:07 a.m. Tuesday.

Reports indicated a man was yelling and swinging a pipe at several people in the area, Lt. Michael Pena said.

“The male confronted the officer with the pipe,” Pena said. “The officer discharged his firearm several times, striking the individual.”

The man was taken to the hospital to be treated.

A long silver metal pipe that appeared to be cut down*was seen in the middle of Weber Road. Several evidence markers were placed around the pipe, which appeared to be about a yard long.

Police blocked a section of Weber at Gollihar as crime scene investigators took photos of the scene.*

Identities of the man and the officer were unknown Tuesday. Pena said the department intended to release the name of the officer involved, but it was unclear when it would be released.

The officer was placed on administrative leave, per department policy, Pena said.
The Nueces County District Attorney's Office said it would "review this incident fairly and incisively to ensure a fair and just outcome," a news release reads.

"When the investigation is concluded and the case file is turned over to our office, we will review the evidence thoroughly and impartially," the release reads.*

Officials with the district attorney's office also offered sympathy for the people involved.

A video of the shooting quickly circulated social media.*

The video shows a man in what appears to be a black hoodie and red shorts holding a long metal pole. He appears to begin to swing the pole in the direction of an officer before the officer fires several shots, the video shows.*

The man is seen dropping the pipe as shots are being fired. It appears more than three shots were fired.*

The man falls to the ground and the officer walks toward him as vehicles begin to drive away on Weber Road, the video shows.*

The officer stands near the man and attempts to direct traffic near the scene.

Re: Officer Involved Shooting in Corpus Christi

That was OTT, a fucking child could have gotten out of the way of a swing like that. Cops these days just open fire at the mere hint of aggression, he'll get away with it though.

Re: Officer Involved Shooting in Corpus Christi

I'm not anti cop by any stretch. But that's a terrible shoot. He should be fired immediately and brought up on charges.

Make an example of his ass, you are not a God or even a king. You don't get to shoot or kill someone just because they don't follow your orders. And you shouldn't be allowed to create the situation where you're in danger if its easily avoidable.

From this short clip, obviously don't have all the information. But it appears nobody is in imminent danger. So why didn't the cop wait for backup? Use a taser or a less lethal weapon?

Or perhaps try and calm the suspect down, stand back and just talk. If the guy charges you, then shoot him. But it looks like the cop is the one moving forward.

It looks like the cop wanted to shoot him, so he made it happen.
We've made it easy for cops to make the decision to shoot first and ask questions later.

If they tase the dude and he falls and splits his head open and winds up in the ER or dies of a heart attack, some lawyer will argue their way into a 7-figure settlement for wrongful injury or death.

If they just shoot the dude and he dies, the blue wall comes up and they'll find ways to protect the badge unless the shooting is just egregiously wrong.

There's a lot less paperwork in killing folks, so people need to behave a little better around the cops.
