Dad was riveted to his cell phone and was fatally shot before he realized they were under attack.

Son had no cell and good situational awareness. Son had stood and turned tail to sprint before the gunman fired the first shot. First shot appeared to be at the son, then the gunman redirected to Dad.
The murdered victim was not the surviving victim's father - it sounds like his mob boss father was already taken out some time ago.

Impossible, Australia banned all that stuff, right?
Some criminals obtain firearms but of course they face serious charges if found with them. In country areas you are more likely to have gun related deaths involving guns owned legally by farmers. In cities it is typically 'drug trade' including bikie gangs related and doesn't involve 'civilians'.
