Survivable? I read about a skydiver with no chute landing in a muddy swamp flat and surviving. Seems possible if the ground was a bit more forgiving, especially as the unfurled chute seemed to slow him a bit...

Thats because they intentionally practiced on landing on a soft ground. Even with parachutes landings tend to be a bit rough.
