Remember, these guys and gals do this for a living. They can't afford to get in a "fair fight" every time they come up against a perp. This is why it's important to follow an officer's instructions.

That being said, the person to blame in all this is the one who you can hold least responsible; the mother. This may be the officers' first encounter with this individual, but she'd had to deal with him since they day he was born. What might be alarming for us is just another day at home for her. Too bad the 911 dispatcher didn't think to ask if the son had any mental deficiencies before officers arrived. If someone had asked, I can guarantee you they wouldn't have been standing so close to the door.

I'm checking this drill out right now, good stuff. Considering how close this guy was I side with the cops on this one, the mother should have approached and thought out her actions before calling the police on him.

The mother called the police and they responded. It does not matter if you have a mental condition or not when it comes to giving voice commands to someone to drop a potential weapon. Yes, a screwdriver is a potential deadly weapon. Bullet proof vests do not stop stabbing weapons. He made a fatal mistake by not complying and lunging at the police officers which gives them the right to use deadly force. Why not taze? It's a fucking screwdriver, not a gun or a knife. Yes, you can do damage with a screwdriver, but not that much, especially with two cops present, and only one nutbar.

That said... I don't protect the mentally ill. If someone is threatening someone, behaving dangerously, and is a danger to other people, and they do something violent, fuck them. Seriously. Fine, acknowledge that they were mentally ill, but it doesn't excuse them from being dangerous.

Treatment for the mentally ill should be reserved for those who haven't attempted to kill someone as a result of their condition. Bullets for the rest of them.
