Wow, all those onlookers and only one guy (who sees what's happening too late) actually runs to try to help. So sad. And ugh...dowry I believe is technically illegal, now, but it still goes on. There's a lot wrapped up in something like this, too. Perceived lost honor / status and all that. |

India is just another nation still clinging to many outmoded and strange social customs. Arranged marriages, the caste system, etc. If you're not affluent, you're fated to a life of struggle and poverty with virtually no way to rise above your station in life. Much of it is technically outlawed, but still heavily practiced.

It's a whole different culture over there. She would have been an outcast over him refusing to go through with the marriage, and probably the whole family would have been laughed at as it was over dowry issues. Their whole lives revolve around their arranged marriages over there. They call it honour, don't they, it means everything to them.
